  the overall shape and the applique can startle the beginner who is used to the much more classical moroccan khmasas with arabesques and distinct fingers but i testify this one is the old moroccan stuff!!

  beautiful khamssa ayis. the salamander is form a sign that it is from south marocco

  Wonderful khamsa, Ayis! Nice patina. I love the salamander. This is so big. Would it have been worn on a chain?

  Thanx Toya. I remember my grandmother told me she used to own a pairwith her mother, i couldn't figure out how they would wear them until i stumbled across some old pictures such as this one below.

  Actually these khmasas as well as the big louhas were hung with probably a silk cord (not a metal chain) which was hidden under the garment (the Kaftan); middle breast buttons were opened to allow the khamsa out and then the buttons are closed.

  The visual effect makes the khamsa appear as if itwere pinned to the kaftan itself.
