that is a Tunisian pottery? I just ask, am not sure about this name. The fish is cute. I just remember that I have some pottery from Djerba.. I paid enormeous sums for them, because the seller was so terrible. He scared me, so I bought it, just to get rid of him. Is a long time back, many years... a very unpleasant experience. I think the place was called Midoun, not sure.
Sejnane is in the north west area of Tunisia (near Bizerte). The pottery in this region is a cottage industry typically made by village women. Ceramics in other parts of Tunisia (like Nabeul) have become very tourist oriented and highly commercial. I suspect sculptures like this one would have once been rare in Sejnane, but now the village ladies are trying to suplement their meager incomes and so have tried to appeal to a wider market place...but at this time it is still a cottage industry.
Thanks Edith, yes, it is cute. My Djerba experience dates back about 20 years, I do not know how it is today, have never been back there, although I loved the tour to the Chotts (Chott el Djerid etc...and the Oasis towns in the south). Had also some camel riding experience there (not on Djerba, but on the southern mainland). Loved it, love camel riding.
