Anne Leurquin's World of Necklaces shows a similar necklace attributed to Jodhpur, India. It refers to this as a bridal necklace which was part of the dowry given in rich Marwari families.We have had such necklaces in south India as well and call them either Gejjettige or Tussi Patta, depending on the community they come from. I wore a similar one belonging to my grandmother's at my wedding.The string backing is new unfortunately - the jeweller I purchased this from said that the original one was frayed beyond repair.

    The gold balls go slightly underneath the backing. As the backing is new, it's still fairly tight, but will loosen up after several wears, making the piece sit better on the neck.
