Seeking any information on this pendant.

I acquired this from a small shop in Oregon who had gotten it from an estate sale. Inside the cylinder was an indigo cloth wrapped around what appears to be a piece of lead. Can anyone tell me what region it might be from? What the significance of the cloth and lead might be? There was no writing on the cloth. It is coin silver. Possibly about 40 years old. 2 more photos accompany this. This is a close-up of the clasp.

  •         This is a typical thread as used all over West Africa to wear Pendants, I have many of These from Mali and or Niger, but These threads are used in many African countries (Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, etc.)
