Bridal headgear with ‘money hat’. Late-Ottoman. Silifke Provincial Museum.

Bridal headgear with a rural ‘paralı fes’ (= hat with money). The headgear is adorned in the Aegean style. Circa 1900-1925. The hat has a cotton base; its front shows six rows of old coins and metal ornaments. On exhibit in the Silifke Provincial Museum, but probably from the Konya-Karaman region. (© Dick Osseman).

This hat is just gorgeous - same as mine, which I have posted some time ago. I love to see it worn with additional decoration. The side pieces, which I assume are some sort of crochet, look very similar to Libyan temple ornaments. I am going to purchase a set of those at the end of this month and will post them the next time, I am at my home... Regards. Peter

The side pieces are 'iğne oyası' (Turkish needle lace); these ones are in fact the edging of the headscarf, which (as you can see) are sometimes very large. This style of 'oya' is typical for the Izmir region. I'm looking forward to seeing the Lybian temple ornaments. Kind regards, JM.
