They used to be made in a more elaborate form by the Yao, and the Yao also appear to have made some of this type, but mostly this more modern form is produced by the Miao. It is now a fairly frequently seen article whereas the old form is by now VERY rare and difficult to obtain. For further discussion please see my wife Truus Daalder's book *Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment*. As we are travelling and haven't a copy of the book with us I regret I cannot give a page reference! The way the original article was fabricated and used by young girls is really fascinating once you read about it.
