  • The bells look like Indian to me. They are the same as the bells on a head decoration I have. But Afganisthan seeks plausible too. The zig-zag pattern I do not know from those regions, I know those from Egyptian jewelry.

  • Thanks Harald. Any Idea what it may have been used for?

  • Perfume? Kohl? But than it should be more "dirty" inside. For betelnutc chewing? The form looks a bit like the bigger (?) containers I have seen for the chalk.

  • Harald and Tribal Heritage,

Thank you for your comments. It seems this is from the Afghanistan area. There is still puzzlement as to its purpose. Probably a perfume holder. The opening is very small. It does not open all the way and it is just under 1 cm square, so I don't think there's enough room for tobacco or anything like betel.

  • Perfume sounds right to me.I did not know how big the opening was.

Nice to be able to get answers about the identity of objects and jewelry on this site, is'nt it?

  • Nada, my small mango shaped holder has 4cm. lenght and 2cm. width. Same as yours!
The big one(Multan?) has 7cm.lenght, total 10cm. and 3cm. width.
  • @Harlad this is indeed an exciting place to meet and play detective. Akkie and all the others who kindly contributed with photos and comments... thank you for solving the puzzle!

  • i see it as a powder parfum box , the rough Musc from the himalaya. it comes as powder and intensive. even for a parfum it is iseal. they dont carry with a big quantity but just a small one for the day.

other possinility is opium but i m not sure. they dont look like this one

  • the powder musk ones are small.this could be a consentrate of musk.................. i guess

Waqar, i m back in 10 mn. would like to read what Patti and you wrote about the islamic pattern

  • Nada, You're welcome! I learn here also lots of it!
Yes i have heard this possibility, Ait but then you would still have to smell it a bit? At my copies that is not the case. By the way i know this type of holder also in a smaller version!
