  Hi Harold they are from China , I don't know which minority but they very old. They came out with the  big wood buttons that were burl some how thinking near Tibet or Sezchuan type tribes.

  Thanks Linda, nice you mention the burlwood buttons. I thought Mongolia, because a dealer in Mongolian art told that they from that place. But I saw again several of them on the Bruneaf and their owners told it was Chinese stuff. They look like buttons. Nice fact is they sometimes have a beautiful decoration on the backside and why should one hide this by using it as a button? An other dealer thought they might be used as a toggle. They come now in many sizes from small (4cm.) up to over 15cm. About 10 years ago there were only the big ones for sale may be now they are newly made?

  I have never figured out that button deal or this box deal, only that i got them when I was in China and they were available. This is it and the buttons I have a few and sold the rest.   I had thought they were from Sezchuan like I said but not sure.  I have never seen them used, on cloths or anything and have no idea but also similar to the necklace  I posted made from pipe ends and toggle beads. These wood things are from same area.  I also have these small scuptures that are Ming and made from same wood. These were being sold at same time. I should post those too. Very interesting items. I wish some one would say for sure where they are from, would love to know what culture myself. I never asked when I was buying them or else the places selling them didn't speak much English and so it goes.  Did anyone tell you what minority it was ?  They make everything new now as old things are gone so probably they have reproduced those as well!  These are old and not too expensive for what they are...
