throneback

Very rare Karo Batak throne. Only three to four have come out to the US. This one I purchased from a private collection which was collected in the field and from collectors of rare textiles. Tree of life motif and chair back carved in shape that are very similar to the Bactavian chairs of the 17th c. (a bench of which I have) done by Dutch East India trading company for sale to local Dutch living in Indonesia. I believe this was styled from one such style chairs. Incredible local Karo Batak imagry.

  • Wonderful work. What sort of wood was this made of?

  • It was very heavy probalby teak but not sure. Wood type unless you are worried something is not real doesn't really play into works of art like this. It is more to do with the type of object it is and the subject matter. There was a bottom to this not in the photo that was where one would sit on but was not of real interest esthetically so I didn't phtograph that.
