Necklace - Oman

This is a mixture of two necklaces - a double row Marriyah necklace from Sur and a necklace from Sanaw close to Nizwa. It was restrung. I have seen only 3 necklaces of this type so far. One in a shop in Nizwa, nicely mounted behind glass and extremely expensive (the owner has reserved it for the Royal Family to go to a museum), another one in the souk of Muttreh, which was in a very bad shape with many missing elements and would have needed to be restrung as well, and finally this one...I like this piece for its rich, luxy looks and fabulous feel. It is strange that elements of two different kind of necklaces can work so well together...

  • Impressive necklace  ,Peter!

  • Absolutely fantastic texture!

  • Great piece Peter !!! Congrats…looks very expensive…..:-)

  • Dear All; Many thanks for your messages. I have this piece already since quite many years - purchased during one of my trips to Oman... Yes, Angelo, Omani pieces are extremely expensive. They keep on going up if the silver price is up. If the silver price goes down, the prices for these pieces still do not go down... However, the value of good pieces are continuously increasing... With kind regards. Peter
  • A wonderful and unique piece, Peter. It looks almost like a "defence" necklace with all its spikes...

  • How very beautiful and well balanced it is. I love the different textures of the beads working together. The cords look old; so I wonder if was it re-assembled many years ago, or have the threads been treated in some way?

  • I don't think it is strange at all for local women would often build up many a necklace on their chest and the result is always awesome.

Your move to restrung these was the way to go, a lovely conbination between silver, gold and coral

  • Stunning piece Peter!! :)

  • Fabulous! I am just returning from Muttrah having seen a single row necklace with an almost identical central pendant. May I ask which elements are from Sur and which from Sanaw? Were the other two necklaces you have seen also strung in a similar fashion or with different elements?

  • Dear Preethi; Many thanks for your message. The center pendant is from Sanaw. The remaining elements are from Sur. Please note that it is quite difficult to obtain nice Sanaw necklaces. If you find a good, old one, I recommend you to buy it. I have quite a while ago posted a very old (well over 100 year old) necklace from Sanaw on this site. You can check it out as a reference. Please note that the center pendants of Sanaw necklaces are always layered with gold. GOOD LUCK! Peter
