Two mother-of-pearl buckles with religious iconographical themes. From the Kayseri area, folk art. Originally set in a metal (often silver) frame. The representations are (top) a scene with (at least) one saint in a medallion, surrounded by flower motifs, and (bottom) a large bird (probably an eagle, which is the symbol of St. John the Evangelist). On exhibit in the Kayseri Museum of Archaeology. (© Dick Osseman).PS: Placed in the Byzantine section of the museum, without specific dating nor mention of the origin. My personal appreciation: much younger than 'Byzantine' (395-1071); probably 18th-19th century. Rum (Anatolian Greek) or Armenian.
