Yes, Ayis, I would say they are sharp cut with no patina. No wear that I can see.
A similar pillow bead in a necklace is on its` way to me. I will take note of its`condition and show it when it arrives.

The one on the right I bought some time ago when I had only a very hazy idea of where Mauritania is. Recently I remembered that the seller had another one at that time. So I returned and found it was still available!
They are so tiny. And I had to go through the accumulated house detritus of years to find the first one again. It seems it was worth it though.
I love them! I noticed them the first time reading the recent article on Ethnic Magazine! What a pity, I never looked for them, when I was at the Mauritanian border. A sister of my mother-in-law lives in Mauritania, most People of Timbuktu have Family in Mauritania, many are (were) even from there. But it is too Long ago, unfortunately. I really love these carved amber pieces! They seem very rare, so you are lucky to have found them!

Frankie - I have a similar bead to the one on the right which I also purchased some time ago - you are right - they are tiny elusive little things.... I have been searching for ages trying to find it - will post a pic when I do - mine has slightly more dragon-like heads on the ends, same circular pattern with 3 holes. It was described as 'Old Copal Carved Moon Bead'. Back to hunting!!
Hi Luda! Hooray - it shows me that there ARE other similar beads out there somewhere. They must`ve been so fiddly to make.

Chiselled phenolic amber beads from Mauritania - my ultimate dream beads! So glad you started a discussion on these; would love to learn more.
The more i look to them, the more i am convinced that these carved phenolic beads were a european import (idar oberstein??!!) during a flash trend, solely geared towards the mauritanian custommer!!!
They seem to be sharp cut, mechanically processed!!
What do you think of that?
