Makinak Necklace - Nizwa-Oman

This is a bit a more bulky version. Again, the center is gold over wax but the beads look like Amber or Agate.

p.s. this type of beads are made of glass . In the books they are described as ceramic but I studied all of them I do own and all are made of glass.

I agree with Harald, Peter. YOur Oman collection is magnificent. The red beads: could they be Coraline d'Aleppo?

Betty, they look a lot like "cornaline d'Alepo". But that type of beads have a white hart (also called white harts).

And the Omani red glass beads have red inside. I have several "losse' ones so you can look inside.

It was just a guess, Harald. It seemed to me that there was sth. white or light shining though in the red bead at the front of Peter's photo. It's sad that you had some broken beads, but of course it confirms that they are no white hearts :-)

i like this piece, thegolden bead is a dream. yes, i see the beads as aleppo cornaline too. used a lot in arabic peninsula jewelry

Dear All; Many thanks for your comments. There are 3 types of center beads. Gold over wax (most prestigious and valuable version), gold leave as well as brass. The brass version is applied together with a bead on each side and only twisted silver wire (this version does not feature any additional coral beads) on the large makinak necklace. The large makinaks never feature silver beads, however, the smaller ones as the two which I have recently posted, can also be found with a silver bead. I have such a unit and will post it later on. I hope I do not sound to stubborn writing that their do exist bulky silver makhnak. See picture below. The bottom one is very "bulky". Also picture of a bronze center bead.

Dear Harald; Many thanks for your message and no, you do not sound stubborn. I know that this type of Makinak necklaces feature sometimes also silver center pieces and I have written this as well in my posting. I have one in my collection, too. I am talking of the very large ones, which have the same center beads but are at least 3 or more times of this size. The design is slightly different and I have posted them before (two with a gold bead and one with a brass bead). With kind regards. Peter
PS: the upper chin chain with wool is very nice!
