Late-Ottoman ‘muskalık’ (amulet-holder). Central Anatolia / Turkey.

Late-Ottoman ‘muskalık’ necklace (with ‘amulet-holder’). From Central Anatolia, ca. end of 19th century. Silver, turquoise, coral, copper imitation coins. The rear has an engraved decoration. Probably of ‘Rum’ (Anatolian Greek) origin: see the non-Arabic monogram in the central turquoise stone. The box is 6 cm wide; length of chains: 2 x 34cm. Purchased in Konya, in 1996. (Inv.nr. müç021 - Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).

A close-up of the amulet-box, after cleaning the necklace. The operation revealed a pale green background (enamel?) beneath the filigree work.
