IMG_0978 Silver smelling box Ethiopia.

Peter, this is the parfum holder, which I wondered about and connects with yours from Oman,I think. So exciting. The ring which I think may be to use it as a pendant. Very solid. It also make lovely tingling sound because of the small bells attached.

  • Here the box I referred to Peter. Please  what do you say?  Ingrid.

  • very  nice Ingrid!  It is so exciting to see perfume holders and imagine the fragrants they once spilled. Love good fragrances !!!

  • Dear Ingrid; You are absolutely right, there is a strong resemblance to my pieces. I am quite surprised that there are not more perfume pendants around these days. Oman, Yemen and to a certain extend surely also Ethiopia and Eritrea were producing perfumes, incense, etc.. In Oman for example, they are growing roses in the fabulously looking oases, which are used for perfume. The Amouage perfume factory is located just outside of the Muscat Airport and can be visited. While the scents are very Arabic inspired heavy, they are beautiful and VERY expensive.... With kind regards. Peter

  • Wow, this is lovely, Ingrid, and again a piece of Ethiopian jewellery I do not think I have ever come across. Thank you so much for posting it!

And yes, this is looking like a sibling of Peter's pendant. Not so surprising, I think, if we consider all the trade going back and forth between the Horn and the Arab Peninsular.

  • Thank you Peter for all your explanations.  Ethiopia and Eritrea was not much of a parfum country.  I know of one factory run by british people from Israel, but I think that was more a factory were they produced the basic materials for all parfums I think it was from glans of a rat (musk rats?) and also from ambergriss.(from the spermwhale, found on the beach(now protected). Futher it are more countries who use herbs and leaves and incence.  They steam themselves with incence(mirre). In my time the ladies became very fond of western parfums (not the heavy ones like the Sudanese). and used in a pleasant amount when dressed up and to go out.. That maybe explained also why there are not so many around in Ethiopia.  I love all your info sometimes it hits me and bring it back to my Ethiopian experience. Thank you Peter this way you bring  my sleeping info back into live. Love it. Gr. Ingrid
