From Jordan

This is a Jordanian necklace or head ornament, from the early 20th century. The chain is comprised of verticle circles which have been soldered together in threes, each element decorated with filigree and granulation. Suspended from each vertical element is a coin, and the elements are linked together with chain. In the center there is a square focal element with repousse and a small stone, and a larger coin dangle. This style of chain work was worn in south Syria and Jordan, usually in fabulous headresses with embroidery and beading with Peter Hoesli introduced me to. I have not seen the focal element on this ornament on the headdresses, it is possible that it was always a necklace, or that it was reconfigured. I collected this with a small collection of silver from a woman who had lived in Jordan.
