Close-up of the festive costume of a wealthy Muslim woman, from a village near Trabzon. Late-Ottoman, ca. 1870. A large worked 'tepelik' in gilt silver covers her cap; the dangles in the center (on her forehead) are in fact eight golden Ottoman coins. The second showy jewel is a 'gerdanlık' (choker necklace): made of gilt silver, with many golden coins too, and a large pure gold medallion hanging down from its center. Detail of a picture from ‘Les Costumes Populaires de la Turquie’- Osman Hamdi Bey, 1873. (Erfgoedbibliotheek, Antwerpen).
