Dessie Bracelets, Ethiopia

Heavy bracelets from Dessie, Ethiopia. Now a pair thanks to the lovely Betty who sold me a matching one. These bracelets were often given to young women as engagement gifts and sold in Senbete market. One is more worn than the other but they were clearly made by the same man, with the same idiosyncrasies of craft. I believe they are a low to medium grade of silver. Thank you Betty!Dimensions:52mm x 46mm and 48mm x 46mm inside7cm exterior diameter258 and 285 grams

  • Nice twists.  I think the one to the right seems to have a higher content of silver from the color. The mixes are all unique so getting the same blend is probably not possible even if a pair. The work is the same so no one would know they never started life together!

  • Thank you Linda!  I think you are right, you picked out the one that develops a higher shine when polishing.  My guess is they are about 30-50% silver.
