Dessie Bracelets, Ethiopia

Heavy bracelets from Dessie, Ethiopia. Now a pair thanks to the lovely Betty who sold me a matching one. These bracelets were often given to young women as engagement gifts and sold in Senbete market. One is more worn than the other but they were clearly made by the same man, with the same idiosyncrasies of craft. I believe they are a low to medium grade of silver. Thank you Betty!Dimensions:52mm x 46mm and 48mm x 46mm inside7cm exterior diameter258 and 285 grams

  • What luck, Lynn! Love the wear on them. And they're a wonderful size too. I only knew of the granulated Ethiopian telsums, but thanks to the members of this site, my understanding of Ethiopian jewellery has broadened.

  • It's great to see them "reunited", Lynn. You are right, I also think they have been mde by the same person.  It's really amazing. Thanks a lot for posting the picture!

(I think with one of them on each arm, you no longer need to worry about keeping fit!)

  • Wow..these are spectacular.  I'm not familiar at all with these as Ethiopian, so thanks for sharing.  How lucky to now own 2 to wear!  I've collected Ethiopian silver for many years as well, & these are something special...Enjoy!  Lynne

  • They are beautiful Lynn - Congratulations! Peter

  • Thank you Preethi, Lynne, Peter, and most of all Betty!  I think these are nice examples of the jewelry of the common people.  And yes Betty, I am fortunate that I already lift weights and can wear them!

  • I just read that they were not bought as a pair, but as single pieces  -  really astonishing! I love their beautiful glow!  Wonderful bracelet pair!
