This is a pair of earrings bought in Ethiopia, quite rare for Ethiopia, I was told by an Eritrean that fancy men did wear one like this (one piece only).Looking at the work it does look more Yemeni work. So perhaps this was a fashion brought in.

    They might be from Yemen as you say (they look even a bit Indian to me), but of course there were Yemeni silversmiths in Asmara, too, so they might have been "local" in that sense. Do you happen to know if it was Tigrinya man you were said to wear an such an earring?

  • Yes Betty, it was my uncle in marriage an Eritrean(university educated, and my husband,s age) who told me that he knew people who wore it in Asmara. And I saw it once worn by the painter Aferwork who did wear it with his national dress. (but he was Ethiopian).

  • Thank you for all that interesting information, Ingrid. Maybe it was a fashion among intellectuals! Or simply a traditional adornment that men ceased to wear at some point. I must remember to ask some of my "Asmarino" friends. One way or the other, they are fantastic pieces!
