Buckle of a 19th c Armenian woman's belt

The spectacular buckle of a 19th c Armenian woman's belt. The belt as a whole is shown on p. 371 of Truus Daalder's *Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment* (www.ethnicartpress.com.au). Materials: silver, gilding, red stones or glass. The height of the buckle is 9.7 cm, and its width is 17.5 cm.

  • When Truus wrote her book, we were uncertain whether this was Armenian or Turkish. But when I posted it (the complete belt, that time) on the "Ethnic Jewellery and Adornment" Facebook page the other day, a very learned Armenian lady compellingly and very precisely explained to me why is was Armenian (though she quite understood why we had found the choice difficult). A great thing about internet contact today is that you can so often learn from it in a way which even 15 years or so ago was much harder.
