BELT - IRAQI KURDISTAN

This belt is very large and looks like a Russian Belt. However, it is a very rare belt from Iraqi Kurdistan.

I love this belt, Peter! Lovely filigree work and dangles.

Also reminds me of Syrian work (but since there are also Kurds living Syria this is perhaps little surprising). Congratulations, Betty.

What a fantastic belt Peter, congratulations! I think I love the ornaments dangling underneath even more than the belt itself is such a thing is possible. Another piece for your museum. I will say again that for my taste, your collection is more appealing than the published collections and it will be a tragedy if you don't at least have studio art photography taken at some point.

Dear Betty and Lynn: Many thanks for your messages. I went this afternoon back to the shop to purchase the two items which I have posted today. Well, he asked me whether I had time... Of course I had and then he emptied some of his treasure chests... What can I say. I have seen Palestinian head covers full with solid gold coins, Ramallah hats, Hebron hats, etc.... The problem is that afterwards one does no longer know what one wants. Anyhow, I have asked him to reserve a complete set of a face veil (around 2kg heavy!!!), including gold coins and gold nose ring, head decoration and shoulder decoration - absolutely stunning. Well, the price is very high as this is, like all the others I have purchased from him, a true museum piece. I myself have never seen such a veil. Once I afford to purchase it (in approx. 3 months...) I will post a photo of it.
Tomorrow morning, I will go now with my team to Jerusalem, Ramallah, Haifa, Akka, Jaffa and Bethlehem. We finally got the visas! 3 days. I am looking forward to Jaffa as I will check whether the antique shop still got the fancy Iraqi Kurdish necklace (it was so dirty and black, hanging at the back of a show case, only a fanatic jewelry collector would spot it). Well, I will try my luck. Jaffa is much cheaper than Jerusalem. I will post some photos.... Peter
