  • This is a lovely necklace.  Congratulations!!  I love Palestinian jewelry because of how soulful and lived-in it feels.  This piece exemplifies this feeling.

  • This is beautiful - I love the birds! Are they an unusual feature?

  • The birds are not present in every iznaq, but are not an unusual feature in the more ornate ones.

  • Beautiful necklace and title. Why is it called 7-Souls?

  • This is the most elaborate Iznaq I have ever seen! Gorgeous, Peter!

  • It's called 7 souls according to the number of chains that the iznaq has. So there is a one soul iznaq, a two soul iznaq etc. The most elaborate is the 7 soul iznaq (like the beautiful one Peter has) which was worn by the women of Ramallah and Bethlehem,

  • Thank you very much Nada for this information!
  • Lovely, lovely - as usual! What a find!

  • Dear All; Many thanks for your messages - much appreciated.

First of all, such Palestinian necklaces are extremely rare nowadays and if they can be found, they are very expensive. Lynn has described these necklaces and Palestinian jewelry perfectly well and I can nothing add to this.

The 7-Souls Necklace, beautifully described by Nada, is the most classic of necklaces and featured below.

Then, there are diversions of the classic version. One is the necklace with the birds, which is even rarer than the classic version, simply because it was more expensive to produce and hence, only a few could afford it. I have seen once such a bird necklace which was at least twice as big as the one photographed above. When I inquired about the price, I had to sit down - one could have purchased a small car for the money the seller asked. Well, one can always ask.... Nevertheless, it was nice to look at, too....

Below is a slightly different version, this time only with 5 chains but nevertheless very beautiful.

Then, I have a more simple version of such a necklace. I have been told that this was worn by Jewish women. It is simple and beautiful.

    With kind regards.

    Peter

  • Dear All, Sorry, the second necklace has of course 6 chains and not 5. Regards. Peter
