Yemeni anklet Wadi Da'wan?-2

I am very excited about this find. It's an anklet looking very similar to a piece shown in Marjorie Ransom's latest book on Yemeni Silver (p.183) where it is described as originating in Wadi Da'wan, Yemen. I seem to remember, however that Nada posted a similar piece which had an Eyptian hallmark.

  • wow! what a Beauty!

  • Beautiful!  I have a similarly constructed, but differently chased pair of anklets that I bought out of an auction of jewelry originating from Yemen.  I will post them soon.

  • Thanks Eva and Lynn.

Please show us your pair, Lynn.

  • This is a beautiful anklet Betty. It is very similar to the one in Ransom's book. The anklet I posted however definitely has an Egyptian hallmark and my feeling is that the designs of certain armlets and anklets across both sides of the Red Sea have similar designs. I am not versed enough to point to the origin of the design of the ends which a geometric shape that combines squares and triangles, but I've seen this in Egyptian made jewelry, Tuareg jewelry and certainly Yemeni and Omani jewelry.

  • Thank you Nada! Of course you are right, there are so many pieces/styles that can be found on either side of the Red Sea. I was just thinking about the Rashaida for example who wear Yemeni, Nubian and Ethiopian pieces.

  • Two more examples of this type of Yemeni anklets.

  • Thank you for sharing the pictures, Harald. Yours have yet other decoration- so interesting. The one with bells all the way round is particularly beautiful.
