  • Ok

These are not typical Indian Clasps

More North African restringing clasps from 15 years ago before the major importing of findings began.

  • It`s looking more Indian to me now, Sarah. However, the "amber" is just about identical with that on the necklace we both met over - the one with the zoomorphic silver butterfly pendants, identified as originating from S.E. Morocco, which many `Kech traders said was of real amber though I myself still have doubts about.

  • Sarah, our comments crossed. I`m delighted with your opinion as I told the seller that that these necklaces were from Yemen after she`d had them identified at a jewellers as Indian. So at least they`re N. African, possibly Yemeni. Big thanks, Pussycat!

  • Maybe a combination of Element from both places.....happens a lot in Morocco

  • Hello you both!. I am not sure if this will help but see this Ebay link were a necklace with very similar silver beads but with coral instead is offered described as Yemeni: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Yemen-Yemenite-Silver-Red-Coral-Nec...

  • I don't think this looks Indian, but I don't think it looks particularly Yemeni, either although it could originate from around there I guess. The Yemeni usually use the longer beads to finish off their necklaces. This looks a bit generic to me, like it could have been made anywhere and sold as ethnic. But I am no expert at all on these matters.

  • jose, thank you for posting the ebay item. if we look emotionaly to this necklace or the one in ebay, we will for sure like to know that are from yemen.

for me, the metal in this one looks completly new and looks made to imitate old yemen ones. i had almost the same from yemen. ethiopian ones look the same also.

the one on ebay has nice looking metal beads, good done and maybe not so new but the coral is fake, could be glass

  • Interesting, Jose. Thank you. I`ve asked the seller what it is about the necklace which says it`s Yemeni. I`ll let you know what she says.

Patti, I paused over those end beads, too. In my own experience I`ve not seen a Yemeni necklace with such short, plain ends. I thought I had identified the wheat/rye grain motif. Now I`m not at all sure. As you say, perhaps it`s just a fusion piece. Also i think you underestimate your own ability!
