Unusual cross front

This Ethiopian cross is recent find which I like a lot. Hope Ingrid can perhaps comment on its possible age and style. Total length ca. 6cm.

  • Dear Betty, a beautiful individual cross.  Skillfully decorated on both sides.  Lost wax system with decoration afterwards.  It is a Solomonic design popular from the Dessie area.   The decoration is really outstanding and generous.  Evil eye protection on the  top hinge.  As far as I can observe from the photo due to wear on the bail and the generous use of material, I would place it in about 1930. Really a toppie.

    Well done. Gr. Ingrid.

  • Dear Ingrid, Thank you for your comment! The bail is quite worn, but I wonder if it is the original one. This piece might have spent quite a time of its life in a collection without being worn. I really love it and am happy to know that it finds your approval too :-) Kind regards, Betty

  • Betty, Silver crosses were not in use in Ethiopia since 1880 and than the very simple solomonic shape, maltese type of cross.   these designs are of a much later age and more individual decorations have been undertaken. These quality crosses are almost not available in the free market since 1980s.

  • Absolutely beautiful, Betty!  Congratulations!

  • Thank you Ingrid and Lynn.

I can never resist when I find a nice Ethiopian cross....and as Ingrid said, its difficult to find older quality pieces... I will post a few more in the coming days, but this is my favourite.
