Anna, the piece is lovely, especially the focal pendant. I've seen these Afghani necklaces before, but never with Turkoman side pendants; are they additions to the necklace?
Thank you Hillary. This type is rarer in my limited experience. This one is just as it was first made. There is one with almost the same side plaques with the table cut carnelians and a similar chain in the Reinhold book Old Silver Jewellery of the Turkoman, pages 150, 151. The amulet on the the one in the book is the old ancestor symbol type with no inscription but with glorious decoration. I have seen one other dagdan like the one in my photo. It has the same design and inscribed amulet, but is not as nice or complete as the one in my photos.

Afghanistan is home to parts of the Teke, Ersari and the Western Yomud tribes, so it is quite common to see Turkoman jewelry from Afghanistan. It is really not a mixture of Afghan (Afghani is the coin ;)
jewelry and Turkoman jewelry. The jewelry from Afghanistan of any quality is Turkoman. Just like the carpets ;) Well, the Baluch carpets are nice enough, I have to admit.
I meant to write Dieter and Reinhold Schlechter as the writers of Old Silver Jewellery of the Turkoman. Sorry.

but the "stones" look transparent to me, so surely not cornelian?

You are correct that some of the stones are somewhat irregularly faceted red glass. My title could only be a certain number of characters long, so the last part of the description was cut off. I also made sure to add that the bottom four florets on each side were set with irregularly faceted red glass. Thank you for correcting my oversight. I meant to include that information with the first description.
