Tuareg Chomeissa Mali - 3

another light situation - Tuareg Chomeissa, Mali North, 9,5 x 7,5 cm, high silver grade, copper-brass part mounted on Silver baseThe middle part looks actually darker and more like copper than on the photo. I decided not to make it lighter by polishing, but leave it like that.

  • Is it new? or vintage?  i love it........

  • could be a pic. for a poster for an exhibiton....(Should the Rietberg restart a Tuareg exhibiton  with hopefully this time more catalogues for sale.)

  • @Thank you Chantal. It was sold as "used", I think it is contemporary not old, but I have no exact information. And it was said to be from Mali. I have not seen any like this before neither in Mali nor anywhere else, but I love the combination of the materials and colours. It is quite big, bigger than my other Chomeissas.

  • @Chantal -  I have a smaller one from the Niger, with a small carneol on it, it seems to me a similar  style, especially the back (the signature and the little logo). The Niger one is contemporary (bought about 10-15 years ago from a French woman who is married to a Tuareg chief in Tahoua), but it has no second metal on it like this one.

  • Yes, I think that the second metal is the novelty.for me anyway.See what Ait says.......

  • I like its colour, it is  not just brass, is has probably some copper in it, it has wonderful colour  (something like "old gold", if one may say so........ although gold never changes its colour when getting old...... but this is how I see it).

  • now that you mentioned my name !!!

90%  i know the piece. i had it in hand.

the last seller bought it from a friend who is from Mali. the last seller know only that is from Mali.

it is touareg work from Bamako . between 5 and 15 years old. not worn

    nice piece

  • @Ait Ouakli, thank you for the information! I thought that perhaps it was not worn (although it was said to be worn) because the backside is very shiny and if worn, it would have some scratches - it  has none.  What I like about this item are the colours (resp the various materials), the reddish-yellow part has a wonderful colour that I have never seen like this. I can only describe it as "copper-brass" mixture, relatively dark - it does not come out on the photo very well. ( It looks more coppery than the photo shows).

  • it is brass. it has this color because of polishing

  • @Ait Ouakli: it must contain copper. I have many brass objects, they are yellow. This one is reddish. Probably they mixed copper with the brass. The colour does not come out on the photo. (the photo looks like brass, the real one is more red). I will try to catch the colour some day on a photo.
