Indonesian silver forks bracelet set

This set of bracelets was made from a pair of Antique Indonesian hallmarked silver forks with delicate pierced work designs and surface etching. a beautiful ornate set. The design features fishes, temple dancers, flowers and scrolls. adorned inside and out! 6.2 cm inner diameter flexible £170 the set

    This is Yogya silver from central Java, Indonesia. The cut-out figures on the top are from the classic Javanese shadow-puppet theatre called Wayang. The figures usually represent Arjuna, a hero from the Mahabharata, and favourite of Javanese. I can also make out traditional lotus motifs.

    Yogya (old spelling Djokja) silver has been made in the town of Kota Gede near the royal city of Yogyakarta. It was started in the 1930's as a colonial project to employ impoverished silversmiths who had lost the patronage of Javanese nobility.

    This cutlery could very well be pre-WW II. I can't read the stamp, otherwise I could look it up for you. Older pieces usually have a silver content of 800, often stamped on the back.

    There are still many workshops in Kota Gede, producing wonderful jewelry as well as larger pieces.
