  • Dear Bianca; This belt is STUNNING!!! Congratulations! Peter

  • Wow!! I have never seen a belt from Libya; I love seeing the special Libyan engravings with the Ottoman influence of the bow in front.  The hand is a delicate touch.

  • And another Wow from me. Really beautiful and not often seen - I think Alaa once showed us a similar piece if I remember right... Love the hand, too!

  • Thanx Betty for remembering.

Yes i own a similar one, which gave me mightmares to locate on the ethnic jewels map until i found out it was libyan .

The construction of it as a single repousse wide silver band, is the most striking feature of these belts

  • Very attractive. Alaa, is it brass and silver or all silver ? I wonder has this belt held also a lining? or else it maybe a bit sharp? love the flowing vanes. Gr. ingrid.

  • This should be all silver, i reckon the buckles framing parts could use some thourough cleaning to retrieve their shine!

It is actually a very sharp object, very metallic, very industrial but quite flexible.

It was certainly embossed on lead in the ottoman fashion

  • Thank you Alaa, Good of you to answer my question,  but I have to give the compliment to Bianca it was her photo.  So Well done Bianca and Alaa.

  • I shall add that this belt was by no means a "beduini / bedouin" ornament, rather a very citadine object worn in both tripolitania and cyrenaica (tripoli and benghazi for that matter) and we have early postcards showing even jewish ladies from tripoli wearing it

I gather Peter will be drawn to this object for the simple fact that he is a very enthusiastic collector of ottoman belts and i firmly believe that this libyan one has a rooted ottoman tradition

  • Dear Ala'a; You are absolutely right, I am very drawn to it. As mentioned before, it is a stunning belt and I love it. Regards. Peter
