This is interesting... a double headed eagle on a South American shawl pin. I wonder why. Is it related to the double headed eagle of the United States? Shawls and ruanas are in fashion this winter so the shawl pin will be much in demand :))
Yes Thelma I was also a bit curious about the double eagle. I have not had time to search for information yet but a quick google turned up another one described as 18th century Peru, se photo from

Cecilia, when I saw Michael's pin again, I remembered that we'd had a discussion about these pieces a couple of years ago. I think it was in relation to a pin that Peter posted but is no longer shown. They are associated with the Spanish conquistadors and can be found in most former Spanish colonies in South America. Hillary and Toya might know more.
Do you think that there is any influence from the Thaler decoration?
Yes the thaler is an interesting suggestion. I have let my husband, who is Russian, search for other use of the double eagle outside Russia and it seems to be in use also in Guatemala and parts of Colombia. Might this have to do with the 16th century Spanish influence from German Roman Empereor Karl V who also ruled as Carlos I of Castillia and Aragonia.
