OTTOMAN BELT BUCKLE 2

This is the second belt buckle. Same as the first one, rather large, high silver and exceptional. Here again, there is a mauve velvet arranged between the first and the second layer of the buckle. It is the first time for me to see filigree birds on such a buckle and I have arranged a close-up of the same on another photo.

  • This is gorgeous Peter, congratulations!  I love the filigree birds and the spangled star shapes on the chain.  Are they Bulgarian?

  • Dear Lynn; Many thanks for your message. No, I do not believe that they are Bulgarian. I bought them here in Jordan and therefore, believe that they were worn in the Levant or maybe in Turkey. They are unusually heavy and rather large. They have been part of a collection, whose owner decided to sell them for whatever reason. The 4 buckles (I will post the photos of the other two buckles next month) are all pretty much of the same style, size and weight. They all feature the same technique of manufacture with a colored velvet between the first and second layer and a silver spacer between the second and the third layer. Therefore, I assume that they all have belonged to the same lady... this is just my theory... By the way there are some additional items from Saudi Arabia, Iraq (Kurdistan), Bukhara and Turkmenistan in the same collection, which I have of course also reserved to be purchased next month! With kind regards. Peter

  • Thank you for the explanation Peter.  They are gorgeous.  I am particularly looking forward to your Saudi Arabian and Iraqi Kurdistan pieces!
