Maybe many of you know the famous nielloed necklaces of the ait seghrouchen.
This type does come from related groups from eastern middle atlas that have lost the niello technique and adopted slowly the use of coins instead......a result of the steady migration of the skilled smiths, which is itself a result of the impovrishment of local semi nomads that have lost the huge income of caravan trading and transportation ( between saharan south eastern morocco where once african goods where arriving and cities of north morocco, mainly FES)to which they used to take part of or at least to give protection in return of money!!!!
Slowly silver was no longer used replaced by metal, genuine niello soon abandonned in favor of imitation and eventually leading to a complete swap of designs and models to the unique coin (silver when rich and metal when poor)...coral same smae replaced by plastic!
The issue of impovrished ethnic population is seldom adressed in serious studies and researchers do only stress on the fashion-change as the sole cause of the ethnic jewelry decay

Is the top part gilded? Or is that just imagination? Is this also a tassedit as Ayis writes? How is this one worn ? Because the top parts are stiff for fitting on a neck, or are the 3 pieces rounded?
