Dear Peter, This is very interesting and distinctive ... the three triangles with their applied decorations look very Yemeni and the double beads with that little platelet between them are equally Yemeni. I found a necklace very like this in Marjorie Ransom's book. She says it comes from the district of Bur'a in the mountains above the northern coastal plain of Yemen ... So the ideas didn't have far to travel to Saudi Arabia! I envy your visits to the souk! Have you been to the silver souk in Jeddah yet?

Many thanks for your comments. Yes, this is a special piece and not easy to find. You should have seen, how it was displayed, hanging on a nail at the entrance wall among all the broken and distraught, mostly low silver jewelry, all black and dirty. The seller had it only since 2 weeks...
I have posted some more finds of my most recent jewelry hunt in Riyadh. This time, I had to wait for the shops to re-open after prayer time and not many did. Some of the antique shops, I have never seen open and the shop, which I intended to visit for the Rashaideh pieces did not open at all. I assume that the owners open them ostly only on Fridays. Hence, I might have to visit once on Fridays (Friday is our Sunday in most countries in the Middle East) or Saturday's. This is apparently when there are special displays of antiques or whatever is considered by them as antiques. Also, there is another souk close by, which I did not visit yet.
I did not go to Jeddah yet. Jeddah is well over 1,000 km from where I am stationed. Jeddah is at the west coast (towards Egypt, close to Medinah and Mecca), while I am stationed on the east coast (next to Bahrain, Qatar, Oman). However, I believe that we have a company meeting in Jeddah in coming December, which will be the perfect opportunity to do so...
I might go this afternoon through the few stores here in Al Khobar. I go there only every 2 months or so - I do not want to look desperate....

Dear Toya; Many thanks for your comments. Yes, I do enjoy my monthly visits to Riyadh. I will be able to go back soon as our Chef Patron, the Michelin-star Chef Vineet Bhatia is making his bi-yearly visit to our hotel in Al Khobar and our restaurant in Riyadh (at our hotel, we have the award winning [best Indian Restaurant in Saudi Arabia] Maharaja by Vineet Restaurant of which I attach a photo). We are managing as well the Maharaja East by Vineet in Riyadh, which is why I can visit the capital monthly and at the same time visit the souk... With kind regards. Peter

Dear Betty; Many thanks for your comments. I and my executive team had a fabulous Indian lunch yesterday, prepared by Chef Vineet Bhatia personally. Another one is coming up on Sunday in Riyadh - after a stint to the souk of course! You do not need to travel far to enjoy Michelin Star Chef Vineet Bhatia's cuisine. He also has an outlet in Geneva (Rasoi Restaurant at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Du Rhone Geneva) and London (Vineet Bhatia Restaurant - formerly Rasoi Restaurant but now fully renovated and revamped with 15-course dinners...). Both of these restaurants have a Michelin Star rating.... With kind regards. Peter
