Dear Lynn, this is a very good question. The one I bought it from said that it is from Turkey, which I doubt. I would rather allocate it to Iraqi Kurdistan but then I could also be mistaken. I keep on asking people but never really get a clear answer. I know that I have seen before a similar necklace but cannot remember where... I will find out and if I do, I will let you know. Yes the chain and overall design remind me of the few Iraqi necklaces I have seen. There might be something similar in Saad Al-Jadir's book. I will take a look later.

Dear Peter, Fine necklace! I have a similar object, better to say; the lower part of it.The dangles are a bit different. It' s a silver one. I always thought it' s from the Kurdisch part of Iraq, like you mentioned. Maybe Turkish Kurds wear the same type of necklaces?. Is this one gilt silver? I will post a picture of my necklace later this week. An item like this one is to find (uncertain origin, uncertain period (!) in Ethnic Jewelry. A Schifferbook for Collectors. Sibylle Jargstorf. page 129.

Dear Johanne: Many thanks for your comments. I have a book describing the jewelry used by the Jewish community of Kurdistan but could not find the necklace in it. The chain is the only thing that is typical for this region's jewelry. The jewelry for each ethnic group is different but for sure there are similarities. Mine is silver with a heavy gilding, whereby parts (coins, etc.) are complete gold. Thanks for the mention about the reference book. I will look for it. With kind regards. Peter

This is the strangest necklace, never seen anything like this before, would not have know where this was from. The only thing that looks familiar is the style of chain.
