  • Dear Peter, this is a beautiful box. I have a similar piece but with agate dangles.  I was told that mine had been made by a Jewish silversmith who had travelled from Yemen, was probably staying in Jeddah and working for the Rashaida. The silver is very good... from melted down Saudi ryals. So it looks as if it is possible that Jewish silversmiths were sometimes itinerant and might have been employed for particular commissions or to work for particular groups.

  • Dear Ingrid; Many thanks for your comments. Yes, I understand that before emigrating to Israel, many Yemeni Jews moved to the Hijaz region where they were working for a short period. There were also quite a number of Ethiopian Jews migrating to Ta'if in the Hijaz region during the 300 year of Ottoman rule there. I am very keen to visit Ta'if but have to wait for an opportunity to visit Jeddah. From there, non-muslims can travel to Ta'if on a separate road. Ta'if is very close to Makhah. With kind regards. Peter
