Mystery mother of pearl fragment - 3 magi

These fragments were in the possession of my husbands late aunt who left Russia as a young girl in the 1920s. Since the family lived in various places before settling in Germany, it is hard to say where these pieces are from or what they once were part of.Strictly speaking no jewellery - but Peter's wooden Bulgarian cross with mother of pearl inlays inspired me to show these...

    These fragments look gorgeous and are surely very old - the carving is delightful! Thank you for posting them.

    In Bulgaria, such religious pieces belonged often to inhabitants of monasteries, hence, monks and nuns. The same goes with the mother of pearl inlaid buckles. Those buckles with religious motifs were usually worn by monks and nuns. Others were wearing similar buckles but with other motives - in many cases birds/eagles, etc..

  • Thank you Peter, that is some very interesting information! I remember the great belt buckles you showed us which were also inlayed with mother of pearl.

    Looking at the shape of these fragments here, they once must have formed a larger round ornament - obviously with relating to Christmas.
