Great photo, Ishvara. Is it a recent one? I remember seeing people doing this years ago. The woman in the middle has whitened her face. Is this significant? Maybe a funeral?
I also like this Picture. We know very Little here about South African tribes. Is Mfengu a tribe like Xhosa and Zulu? The ladies look great. Thanks for showing. In modern South Africa, are the tribes still living traditionally? How about the San?
Xhosa is more of a language group than a tribe because it doesn t have a king like the Zulus do . The Mfengu speak Xhosa and have their own distinct dress and culture . They live near the Kei River in South Africa . Yes many of these Mfengu still live traditionally in the hills of the Eastern Cape area. The photo is an old post card from the Seventies.
