  I have not been to Harar but it is the one place in Ethiopia I would love to visit. I have looked into many Ethiopian tours but none of them includes Harar, maybe because it is so close to Somalia? But I love the baskets from there and the silver--You don't see much silver from Harar or Somalia or the Horn of Africa here.

  Many agencies can bring you there. It is an amazing walled city. Upon entering, it feels like you have left Ethiopia and entered a new country. In fact, it wasn't always a part of the country as we know it today.

  When divorced, Harari women are not entitled to a monetary compensation. She may leave with all jewelry she has accumulated during her wedded years.

  We found such a divorced entrepreneur in Harar from whom we acquired many beautiful pieces.

  Sounds fascinating and certainly someplace to see before I die! I know that there are many mosques there, it is in fact a major city in Islam -- I am particularly interested in Islamic jewelry, so I am very interested in this city. Would also like to go to Mali and Mauritania -- especially to Mali to look at the huge mud mosque.
