Late-Ottoman 'ferace' (Islamic street-wear). Aleppo (Syria) or Gaziantep (Turkey), ca. 1900.

Late-Ottoman street-wear, from the Aleppo-Gaziantep area, ca. 1900. Exported from there to many urban centers in Anatolia and the Levant. Called 'ferace', 'bürgü' or 'çarşaf' in Anatolia (depending on the region where it was worn). Made of two large rectangular pieces of silk (ca. 110 x 210 cm), sewed together to form a baggy skirt and a kind of large airy cape. The silk fabric is locally called 'meydaniye'. Purchased in Konya, in 1995. (Inv.n° fer004 - Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).
