  This is widely used by the Miao and other SW China minorities at th BACK of the body, for attaching strings to it which hold the apron in FRONT of the body (hanging on the woman's lap) in place. A very characteristic ornament and practical instrument.

  This one looks well used and relatively early to me: early to mid 20th c, I'd say.

  No, this is NOT a "hair ornament". It is worn on the back of the body, and apron strings are attached to it, so that it serves as a counter-weight to what the woman wears at the front. To call this a "hair ornament" is entirely fanciful. Someone or other may at some time have worn it in the hair (after all, much can go there): but that was not what this was made to be. Look at publications on Miao jewellery and you will certainly come across this in more than one place. Indeed there are photos showing how it was worn, apart from descriptions. Why make this kind of assertion without doing homework first??

  I don't understand your issue with this member. Certainly your first comment was enough to inform us of the use of this items. Not everybody looks up articles on the items that they purchase or display, they take them at face value from the dealer. Thank you for clearing up the misunderstanding, but I don't see how this warrants another posting. You seem angry at this poster for making an honest mistake.

  I am simply trying to correct a mistaken description, in the hope that a correct  description will as yet appear! There is no question of anger - I am just hoping that the person posting this has so far overlooked my comment, and may notice it as yet. That is all - quite simple, really. I have no issue with the member at all.

  I think that Susi probably just hasn't seen my posts, and that therefore the article continues to appear with the mistaken description "Miao Hair Ornament". I am just hoping that she may notice as yet what I have said and then correct that description. I am sure it is not a matter of her ignoring me!

  Hi Susi: to edit the caption for your photo, go back to your page with the photo. Above the title of the photo, you will see, on the right, a box called "Options". Click that, and you will find "Edit" as one of the options. That way you can easily change the text that accompanies any of your photos after you have posted them. Not difficult - and believe me, I am almost IT illiterate. Good luck!
