Festive woman's hat. Kurdish, from Sulemani/Sulaymaniyah (Iraqi Kurdistan, near the Iranian border), ca. 1900-1950. Sulemani is the cultural center for Sorani-speaking Kurds (which is the Central Kurdish dialect spoken in Iraqi Kurdistan, as well as in the Kurdistan Province of western Iran). (Kurdish Textiles Museum, Erbil, northern Iraq).

  • Thank you so much for posting this, it confirms the origin and purpose of an interesting ornament I saw offered as Iraqi (the forehead / hat belt.)  I would be very interested in seeing other Iraqi Kurdish photos you have.

    I will post other pictures from museums in this album, if the picture's quality is good enough; to have a look at other material: see my Pinterest boards 10Ia (Iraq, women) & 10Ib (men/former Ottoman Arabic regions).

    I have several of these Jewels myself (same kind of forehead ornaments), but we still have to take good pictures of them.  Since our 'photo-studio' lies in a warehouse that is too large to warm during winter, we have to wait for warmer weather (which will happen soon, hopefully).
