  • Your collection is gorgeous and I am incredibly impressed that you restore silver and leather yourself.  I hope you write more about your pieces and your experiences.

  • Thank you. It sometimes it's as exciting to find a belt in good condition when you find a belt that it has it's original leather. In most cases the leather work can be as beautifully and skillfully executed.
  • I enthusiastically second Lynn`s comment.

John, I`m intrigued to know whether you travel to discover your finds or obtain them on the open market.

  • Frank I am involved in Russian museum projects both here and in Russia but most of my finds are from auctions, eBay and mostly thru collector contacts I have made over the years. I hope on this forum I can trade some of my women's belts to concentrate on my passion which men's Cossack belts and arms.
  • That sounds a lovely way to be involved with ethnic items, John. I`m quite a fan of eBay myself.

You may well be able to trade your women`s belts on this site. Anyway, no harm in trying and I wish you success with the venture.

  • Thanks Frank, either way looks like a wonderful group of people on this site and have a good friend in eastern Ukraine currently and he tells me he has a box of pieces he found at flea markets there so it should keep me busy on projects for a long time.
  • Sounds good. Sadly, there`s nothing like conflict for bringing ethnic items onto the market. There`s been some excellent amber coming out of Ukraine recently. (By the way, I`m Frankie - female!!).

  • My apologies Frankie. Yes sad to say hope they resolve their issues over there.
I am making belts now for two museums one in Austria and the other for military museum in Moscow. I will post an item soon in which I have no clue what it is and hope someone can tell me what is.
  • No problem. Will look forward to seeing the item. I do so love a mystery!
