  • Does anyone know anything about the origin and quality of this belt?  My husband bought it in Nairobi around 1998.  We're guessing it's Zanzibari of Omani influence but would love to know more about it.  The coins are German East Africa - not as common as the Maria Theresa's, I think.  I'll post another photo with detail of the coins and bells.  Thanks!

  • Hi Julianna,

It looks more Indian to me than anything else.  I have never seen anything in our Yemen collection with anything but Yemen coins.  So I doubt if it is related to anything in the Yemeni silversmith tradition.

  • Thanks Anna!  Indian might make sense, given the South Asian immigrants to Tanzania (then German East Africa/Tanganyika).  Interesting idea.

  • Those big bells are very common on bedouin jewelry from southern arabia.

Given the history of zanzibar , it makes sense that this belt comes from there

  • Thanks very much, Ayis - much appreciated!
