Festive urban headgear. Late-Ottoman style.

The hat with the gilt silver filigree work ‘tepelik’ (hat cover, late 19th century) was purchased in Bursa; the large ‘yazma’ (headscarf) is from Gemlik (20 km north of Bursa). Dated: ca. 1930 and made of a synthetic fabric (viscose) – in Turkey a luxury product at the time. It is embroidered with the ‘tel kırma’-technique: geometrical motives obtained by sticking narrow metallic strips (golden and silvery) through the fabric and folding them. The motifs are identical on both sides of the fabric. (Kavak Costume Collection - Antwerpen/Belgium).PS: the embroidered dress is not mine, but from the collections of the ‘Ethnografisch Museum van Antwerpen’.
