very nice! I know them from Mali, perhaps they are imported from Morocco as many things are in Northern Mali (Morocco or Mauritania). My mother-in-law used to pray with such a strand!

I thought they were from Morocco but maybe you are right in thinking Mali.

Perhaps the experts will weigh in on this. It is very nice to hear that your mother in law used them for her prayers.

@I think they are imported in Mali (North) from Morocco or Mauritania, because this style of integrating metal parts into wood is the style of Mauritania - Southern Morocco. In Mali the people do pray with these strands, every evening around 17.45-18.00 (sunset) the women of the house cover their heads with a veil and walk around praying, or sit praying on their knees, and count the beads (similar to habit of Catholics praying the Rosary!). The men pray too, but they usually go to the mosque, while the women do it in their courtyards.

These are Mauritanian prayer beads.

Is the silverwork very fine swirls?

They look like older better made ones from the pic....do you have a close up?

These are often found in Morocco, but originate in Mauritania.

Thanks Sarah. These came from an old collection. I will change the title on my picture to" Mauretanian." I posted a closeup.
