Ear weight from the eastern islands of Indonesia

Ear weights of a stylised "C" shape, to be worn on distended lobes have been a persistent element of Southeast Asian ornament since neolithic times. The theme has had many variations over time and distance; yet the variations still speak of underlying common threads in the cultures across the entire region.

  • Usually thought of as feminine and sexual, both in Indonesia and the Philippines. The shape is closely related to the basic shape of the mamuli.
