Great close-up but I don't see the interior wormhole structure clearly. Do the holes go completely through the fibs?
Hi Patti, yes, the holes go all the way through, it's just that from yeas of use, the smaller holes have become filled up with "gunk". A pin does go all of the way through, but it would be very labor intensive to clean the pieces and it would take away from their aged look.
I was in marrakech when these suddenly appeared in great number apparently smuggled from algeria.
They were then very highly priced compared to the moroccan ones...easily twice as much per gram.
I couldnt find a pair weighing less than 500 gr so i couldn t afford to by them...too bad.
These are mederately large.
Nice addition to any serious collection of north african jewels.
I have to add that there is very very little info on the link between the two centers of production( morocco amd algeria).

Between the two, these weigh 294 grams. The pins have both been repaired and it looks like one of the domes was replaced, but all repairs are old. The work is in amazing condition; I've seen many, many Moroccan examples that are in poor condition.
Yes Ayis, We've been told by several dealers in morocco that jewelry is smuggled into Morocco- even by camelback!
Hi Hillary and others, a question on cleaning such fibulas - would you recommend some cleaning or would you advice letting them stay as is, as it's all part of the pieces' history? I ask because I have a pair of worm-hole fibulas from Morocco and they have some build-up around many of the tiny holes.
Preethi.i propose, if you wanted to have the pieces as collection pieces, leave them the way they are or maybe with a cloth clean a bit the surface.
if you want to wear, better to take the sut away and clean with a cloth after it.
Hillary, the reparations are normal in the old pieces,it gives also a character for the piece.
it was in the 70 a small wave of smuggeling of the old and new jewelry, amber and specialy coral. it stopps in the 73. then in the 80 th . between the 80 and the 85 more old and new jewelry, specialy kabyl. restarted in the 87 until 92 then , it got difficult but the smuggler were doing it.
2004 restarted again until now, but it is less because of the high prices and less pieces on the market.
I would not recommend cleaning. I think that the grime in the holes actually helps support the piece structurally.
