I recently found this rather large amulet holder, but I know very little about it. The seller said it was bought in Afghanistan, though two or three similar pieces which I found through an online search describe these items as Uzbek. It can be opened on either side. I'd really appreciate any information our experts can provide.
I have seen these described as of Tadzhik origin-- it certainly could have made its way to Afghanistan, however, over the years.
Thank you Patricia - I just had a look at your truly superb example. Do you happen to know if these pieces were actually worn or rather used as a protective sort of decoration in a house?
They are personal jewelry, Uzbekis have ones similar to these in shape but usually bearing niello designs. I especially like the ornate clasps on these and the quality of the silver.
