CIMG0504 Ethiopian Hairpin /Jimma?

When I bought this hairpin it reminded so much of a beardedd face, and it still after 40 yrs, does look like that. It is a free design. Workmanship not so well executed, but has a lot of fertility symbols and he tried to be special,(I think)Do not know from what region but could be Jimma/Wollega, because of all the beadwork.

  • Superb...More details?

  • Thank you for featuring this hairpin.

    Gr. Ingrid.

  • Love these, Ingrid!

  • this reminds me too of a face! it might be coincidence of the design, I do not know. Very very interesting! Never seen such before! Also the decorations on the top are really something Special!

  • yes looking at it, it definitely is a very weird piece of work.  You know it is also quite an observation to see how people of the interior who do or did not see magazines etc. look at a photo, they turn it all kinds of way to see an image and finally get it. Could also be a lions face with the beads on top as a mane?????

  • Hi Ingrid, I have a new idea. Could this be a lion's head? (wasn't the emperor named the Lion of Juda or something?). I just had the idea because I had seen somewhere an earspoon with a similar face, and it said, it was an Ethiopian pendant with a lion's head (also there, it was not easy to recognize the Lion, but it could be.... ). just an idea. I will try to refind the photo.....

  • Thats right Eva, that was his call name, the Lion of Judah.  He had also lions  as mascottes with his Bodyguards.

  • 2506000964?profile=originalmeanwhile i found the photo and saved it. It is an earspoon, - well it Needs a lot of Imagination to recognize the Lion, but it is not completely impossible that your pin could be a Lion too... the mane is there........ (I do not know! just sometimes I have ideas....the resemblance is not very big, but then look yourself)

  • yes Eva, it could be a attempt to form a lions head.  Tomorrow I will show you a Eth. ring with the lion,s head.

  • ok, will be looking Forward to it.   For the earspoon it said, it is a lions head, and I found it not very "lionlike",so I thought, if that was meant to be a lions head, your pin could also be one.... (with a lot of Imagination and considering the artists liberty). Perhaps it is not -  perhaps it is.........cannot tell. Could also be, that it has nothing to do with a face at all.....but I like to search and sometimes one finds out. This riddle is not yet solved........just trying.
